In a demonstration of sustainable community engagement, CPB Contractors has transformed a classic 1974 Kombi Campervan into a fully electric mobile information centre. The innovative conversion has given the vehicle a fresh start and is now being used on Transport for NSW’s Warringah Freeway Upgrade project at community events and public spaces.
The 1974 Kombi was originally equipped with a petrol engine with an average fuel consumption of 15.5l per 100km, resulting in approximately 36kg of CO2 emissions per 100km travelled. Today, after an ambitious conversion project led by CPB Contractors Plant Manager Wade Rogan, the Kombi produces zero emissions thanks to its cutting-edge electric motor and six 9.3kWh battery packs.
"The modified Kombi can travel up to 250km off a single charge, and with its fast-charge charger, we can power it up in about three hours'" explains Wade.
Beyond the electric transformation, several additional upgrades enhance the vehicle's practicality and sustainability:
- New durability features such as underbody protection and a strengthened chassis.
- Additional batteries to power auxiliary systems during community engagement activities.
- Stripping of unnecessary components on the vehicle to reduce the energy required for driving and operation.
- The installation of electric power steering to enhance safety and minimise the energy needed when maneuvering.
CPB Contractors Communications Manager Anne Learmonth leads community and stakeholder engagement on the project. She explains how the converted Kombi is a true example of how community and sustainability can intersect and deliver fantastic outcomes.
"We really looked to create an asset that was approachable and encouraged locals and visitors alike to seek information about the project. This encourages a conversation about sustainable construction and project delivery," explains Anne.
"We can park this Kombi up in easy-to-access areas, and we're using it to bring the information quite literally right to local communities. We've received great feedback so far, and our teams love sharing the story of our Kombi," adds Anne.
CPB Contractors’ joint venture delivery of Transport for NSW’s Warringah Freeway Upgrade includes the construction and modification of twelve structures, including four shared user bridges, as well as:
- Upgrading four kilometres of the Warringah Freeway between North Sydney and Naremburn
- Improving interchanges with Falcon Street, including a new northbound on ramp at High Street
- Improved public transport links, with a continuous southbound bus lane from Miller Street to the Sydney Harbour Bridge
- Around 2.5 kilometres of new and upgraded cycleways and pedestrian paths, integrated with public transport networks.
