A 6-Star Green Star rating has been awarded to the Sunshine Signal Control Centre (SSCC), part of CPB Contractors’ joint venture Metro Tunnel Project. Awarded by the Green Building Council of Australia, this rating recognises 'World Leadership' in environmentally sustainable building design and construction.
Priya Pathamanathan, CPB Contractors’ Sustainability Manager, attributed the win to the efforts of the environment and sustainability team
“Our CPB Contractors team has gone above and beyond to achieve this six-star world-leading green star rating”, added Priya.
A ‘Best Practice’ or above score was awarded to each of the nine categories in the SSCC’s Green Star Rating submission. Highlights included:
- the use of double-glazed windows, skylights and the installation of HEPA filters on all heat exchange units
- installation of a solar photovoltaic system, LED lighting and thermal insulation, which contributed to an 86% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions at the SSCC
- water efficient fixtures, a rainwater harvesting system and a subsurface drip irrigation system, which resulted in a 92% reduction in potable water consumption
- individual life cycle assessments for all design features and materials used in the SSCC, which has seen a 130% reduction in overall global warming potential
As part of the Rail Systems Alliance (RSA), CPB Contractors is working with the Victorian Government to deliver the Metro Tunnel Project. The 6-Star Green Rated SSCC building will be the hub for management and operations of the Metro Tunnel Project’s High Capacity Signalling system.
