Welcome to the future of Sydney: PM launches airport works
The transformation of rural paddocks at Badgerys Creek into an international airport has begun in earnest after Prime Minister Scott Morrison officially started the earthworks for Western Sydney Airport. The CPB Contractors and Lendlease Joint Venture (CPBLL JV) won the $80 million contract for the early earthworks package in July this year.
Mr Morrison gave the green light to begin at an official groundbreaking ceremony, describing the project as “the biggest game-changer for the city of Sydney since we built the Harbour Bridge”.CPB Contractors Managing Director Juan Santamaria said the JV team was creating history. “Everyone working on this project is aware of its historical significance,” he said.
“A second airport for Sydney has been talked about for more than 50 years, so it is very satisfying that we have struck the first blow to make it a reality.
“Western Sydney Airport is such a critical piece of infrastructure for Australia, and I am proud that CPB Contractors is a part of it.”
The early earthworks include:
- The delivery of earthmoving equipment and establishment of site offices.
- The delivery of bulk earthworks and moving more than 1.8 million cubic metres of earth.
- Construction of a new and realigned Badgerys Creek Road.
- A new intersection at Elizabeth Drive, in collaboration with Roads and Maritime Service.
In the past two months, the JV team has been establishing a site compound and access points, and doing preliminary site investigations.
The client, Western Sydney Airport, is a new government business enterprise, established by the Australian Government as a company to deliver and operate the Western Sydney Airport project.
